Esta red de monitoreo permite obtener en tiempo real y cuasi real, datos relacionados con las condiciones oceánicas y atmosféricas del territorio marítimo colombiano, con el fin de ofrecer información oportuna para salvaguardar la vida humana en las distintas actividades marítimas y costeras que se realizan en el país, así como servir de insumo para la investigación científica marina y actividades para la gestión de riesgos marinos y costeros.
La RedMpomm comprende estaciones meteorológicas y mareográficas automáticas, boyas de oleaje direccional, boyas metocean y boya tsunami, ubicadas en diferentes puntos marítimos nacionales cercanos a los puertos y principales ciudades del litoral, registrando datos de meteorología marina, tales como viento, temperatura ambiente, humedad relativa, presión atmosférica y radiación solar; y datos oceanográficos como oleaje, nivel del mar, temperatura superficial, entre otros.
